The void and the needs
There is a void in our modern secular culture that many people implicitly feel.
A sense that the culture is centered too much around:
- Daily survival
- Materialistic pursuit of property accumulation
- Entertainment which is shallow and distracting from the important things in life
Our human psyche is yearning for nourishment of our deep emotional and psychological needs, such as:
- Authentic connection with ourselves, with each other, and with nature
- Clarity about what’s the meaning and purpose of life
- Guidance about how to live life well and ethically
As far as I know, this void did not exist for most of human existence across the ages (at least not in its present form) because the central role that religions and spiritual traditions played in answering human needs.
Important caveat
Before I explore this theme further, I want to emphasize upfront that this website is not at all about advocating for any existing religion or spiritual tradition. In fact, there are not only advantages but also disadvantages and problems with existing traditions, as will be covered later.
