This page is part of “Creating a New Positive Religion or Spiritual Tradition”.
This is still a DRAFT.
Can one belong to Lumessianity and to another tradition?
Yes. A person can combine Lumessianity with another religion or spiritual tradition, and belong to both at the same time, but only after making the necessary adjustments, as described below.
Metaphysical beliefs
When it comes to metaphysical beliefs, such as belief in God, each person may believe whatever they find right. We uphold freedom of belief. See Our Stance on Metaphysics.
Ethics: where we agree
When Lumessianity and the other tradition agree, there is no problem. Many good things exist in the older traditions too. For example, the Golden Rule appears in many of them:
- Judaism: “What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow” (Hillel, in Shabbat 31a).
- Christianity: “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them” (Matthew 7:12).
Ethics: where we clash
What matters is this: when there is a clash between Lumessianity and another tradition, Lumessianity prevails. Otherwise, joining Lumessianity would have no meaning.
Example: sexual orientation
Lumessianity, like Wellism, explicitly supports the right of every adult to consensual sexuality according to their orientation, including homosexual orientation. Therefore, Lumessianity rejects teachings that mark such orientations as a sin, an aberration, and the like, such as the verse in the Torah:
“Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.” (Leviticus 18:22)
Example: freedom of conscience
Similarly, Lumessianity upholds freedom of conscience. Therefore, we oppose any punishment for holding a spiritual belief, and in particular the death penalty. For example, we reject the commandment in the Torah to stone to death a person who worships other gods:
“[If there be found among you…] man or woman… [that] hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them… Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman… and shalt stone them with stones, till they die.” (Deuteronomy 17:2–5)
And we oppose the laws in some Muslim-majority countries that punish apostasy (leaving Islam) by death (see Dogma).
Holidays and customs
A person who has taken Lumessianity upon themselves and also enjoys celebrating the holidays of existing religions can do so.
But the whole idea is that Lumessianity guides one’s life. So whenever there is a mismatch, Lumessianity prevails.
