This page is part of “Which Human Needs Are Met by Religions and Spirituality”.

Spiritual traditions offer direct experience of something greater than oneself — an encounter with the sacred, the numinous, the divine, however each tradition names it. This is different from an intellectual framework of meaning: it isn’t a set of answers to hold onto, but a felt sense of connection to something vast — moments of awe, oneness, humility, gratitude, and peace, of being enveloped by something larger than one’s own individual existence. This meets a longing that reasoning alone cannot satisfy: not just to understand life’s mystery, but to touch it directly.
